Spanish influence in Trinidad

The Spanish first came to Trinidad in 1498. In fact, it was Christopher Colombus who was sent by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to look for a new route. He landed here that year with three ships- Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. The following are some of the influences found in Trinidad that still remain today.
  1. Places- San Juan, El Dorado, Santa Cruz, Cantaro, San Fernando, Huevos, Monos, Santa Flora, Manzanilla, Toco, Sangre Grande, Sangre Chiquito, Maracas.
  2. Names- Maria, Ana, Juan, Pablo, Carlos, Pedro.
  3. Surnames-Hernandez, De Leon, Lezama, Rosales, Noriega.
  4. Religion- Roman Catholicism
  5. Food- Pastelle ( hallaca/tamal), arepa, empanada.
  6. Music - Parang ( aguinaldo, nacimiento, asunciĆ³n), maracas.
